Such trade-offs figure prominently in numerical methods and constitute an important theme of this book. 2 CONSERVATION LAWS IN ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE Aside from Newton’s second law, there are other major organizing principles in science and engineering. Among the most important of these are the conservation laws. Although they form the basis for a variety of complicated and powerful mathematical models, the great conservation laws of science and engineering are conceptually easy to understand.
