He thinks he’s been out all night at a party; everyone else thinks he’s been away for years. Time in folklore moves differently from time in our world: it can stand still, or move faster, or even move forward and backward. On the other hand, Nicolaisen (1980) points out that there are different levels of time in folklore. There is this timeless or outside-of-normal time which frames stories: ‘once upon a time’. But within stories, events are often sequential, and expressed in very human terms; things happen over the course of a day or a week.

Carmichael et al. 1994). In many cases this may become the only kind of research possible. Multiple pasts Folklore and modern science aim to gain different forms of truths. Remains of the past are interpreted in different ways by academic and non-academic people but both make the past in their own way meaningful in the present (see Blake, chapter 15; Shankland, chapter 10; see also Burström et al. 1996; Solli 1996; Voss 1987). Discussions about the reliability of folklore as a (pre-)historical source have implications for archaeologists’ professional legitimacy: ‘Folk archaeology represents a challenge to archaeology’s monopoly on interpretation of the past, and it is to this threat that archaeologists are responding’ (Michlovic 1990:103).

Anthropological techniques can be applied both to elucidating and translating folkloric conceptions, and to rendering a more reflexive outlook upon the academic vision. These points will be exemplified through a critical discussion of chapters in this book. INTRODUCTION Looked at from the perspective of anthropology, the striking feature of folklore is the distinctive way in which it represents space and time, and the way in which it portrays being in the world. Rather than treat these aspects in isolation, it seems preferable to look for consistencies.
